Springs do the heavy lifting on your garage door, not the opener. Many standard torsion springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles, and one cycle is a single open and close. A family that uses the door four times a day can reach that limit in roughly seven years.

Signs of a failing spring include a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coil, a door that feels very heavy or one that lifts a few inches and stops. Do not force the door with the opener, because that can strip gears and bend panels.

Spring work is dangerous because the coils hold enough tension to cause serious injury. Our technicians use proper winding bars and match each new spring to your door weight, height and drum size. On doors with two springs, we usually recommend replacing both, since the second one has the same wear.
